"INSTA LIFE DONNA" By ReeToxA

It's undeniable how instantly catchy the leading persona of ReeToxA, “Insta Life Donna,” is. The song encapsulates muscularity in its driving, low-end thump, booming guitars, and thudding, granulated, reverberant drums, encapsulated in a combe of upbeat synths, reminiscent of 80s pop. The harmonies, more dissonant and gritty, with guitars slickly veering towards 90's grunge and Australian pub rock, stay cohesive as the driving thump and sh-house-accentuated synths pulse through in huge, overriding choruses. Classically, alt-rock, but blended in, this will keep you in tempo dancing throughout.

This song applies humor to a real-life complaint, unsolicited advice from an ex sister-in-law. McKee turns this into a character sketch featuring comic roast and venting on the problem. The persona is dubbed “Insta Life Donna,” and the roast is universal enough to feel honest and resonate with the audience, as a Donna is present in all of our lives. The chorus becomes sharply communal as it is an easy song to sing along to and breathe the frustration away. Rather than burying the pain and irritation, the character voice of the song uses this sarcasm to propose an invitation and exclamation of the audience to redirect their frustration and pain into something empowering and fun, a movement.

In this context, ReeToxA is a Melbourne band led by songwriter Jason McKee, who spent 30 years perfecting his craft before putting together the current lineup featuring Kit Riley (bass), James Ryan (guitar), and Peter Marin (drums). This maturity is evident. "Insta Life Donna” is polished, production-wise, but not perfect; the drums pack a punch, synths are warm and present, and the guitars are grounded. The track is rooted in rock.  McKee is a persuasive vocalist, selling the sarcasm and hurt, from the conversational verse to the chorus that is more open and melodic. Infectious energy and storytelling, the reviewers admitted, and it's easy to hear why: the performance is human, immediate, and, by intention, uneven.

The reason why "Insta Life Donna" stands out is because of its ability to take a small, private annoyance and transform it into a collective anthem. This is the kind of song that feels like therapy and a party at the same time. The signature sound of the song is created through the combination of driving, razor-sharp guitar lines, and synth hooks. The sound is nostalgic but still feels current. If you're still searching for a piece of alt-pop that rocks, this is it.
