IT`S RANDOM

Dora Jar continues her ascent as one of Gen Z’s most intriguing and eccentric voices with “It’s Random,” the shapeshifting new single from her forthcoming EP Comfortably in Pain. At just 25, Jar has carved out a distinctive niche in the indie-pop universe, a whimsical, genre-fluid space where dream logic reigns and sonic experimentation thrives. Building on the kaleidoscopic promise of her debut EP Digital Meadow, “It’s Random” serves as both a reflection of pandemic-era disorientation and a bold, enchanting journey through her ever-evolving soundscape. From the outset, “It’s Random” feels like a lullaby caught in a prism, sweet and delicate but never predictable. The track opens with Jar’s airy vocals floating over fingerpicked guitar, her tone recalling the soft intimacy of artists like Faye Webster. She paints a surreal scene: “All of my cloudy friends are flying high / Now all I can say is ‘Hey’ / What a fucking beautiful parade.” It’s at once poetic and absurd, capturing the strange mix of existential detachment and quiet wonder that marked life during lockdowns.

The imagery she conjures feels like flipping through a dream journal written in code, and yet somehow, it resonates. As the chorus erupts, the song shatters its tranquility, pivoting into a more explosive indie-rock territory reminiscent of St. Vincent’s dynamic arrangements. The gentle fingerpicking gives way to crashing percussion and fuzzed-out guitars, as Jar’s voice rises above the swirl with a mix of vulnerability and conviction. This sonic shift embodies the core emotional tension of the track: a longing for meaning amid randomness, for grounding in a world that’s come unmoored. Jar sings, “I better prepare or I’ll be lost in the plot,” acknowledging the chaos while also leaning into it, embracing confusion as a form of freedom. What sets Dora Jar apart from her peers is her fearless embrace of the fantastical. While many artists in her generation opt for direct, diary-style lyricism, she revels in the abstract, drawing on the whimsical logic of fairy tales and cartoons.

This approach is not without precedent; echoes of Björk’s mysticism and Fiona Apple’s linguistic playfulness ring through her work, but Jar makes it distinctly her own, blending the strange with the sincere. Lines like “Fratica patica automatica” from her earlier song “Polly” exemplify her love of made-up phrases, and “It’s Random” continues in that spirit, blurring the boundaries between language, melody, and emotion. “It’s Random” isn’t just a commentary on the absurdity of pandemic life; it’s a sonic expression of how Dora Jar processes the world not linearly, but kaleidoscopically. With this single, she invites listeners into a mental landscape that’s both fractured and beautiful, playful and poignant. As she continues to open for artists like Billie Eilish and inspire fellow rising stars like Holly Humberstone and Remi Wolf, Jar is proving herself to be more than just a quirky outlier. She’s a genuine visionary in a pop world increasingly defined by uniformity, a shapeshifter unafraid to get lost in the plot, and all the more captivating because of it.
